Canfield Lofts

Description

Completed in 2000, Canfield Lofts was the first for-sale loft project in the City of Detroit. The original steel-reinforced concrete building, built in 1921, was two stories. A third floor was added during the loft conversion. The (35) one-bedroom and studio lofts feature 11-13 foot ceilings, exposed brick & concrete, geothermal heating and cooling, in-house recycling and dry-cleaning services and a common patio. Additionally, many of the lofts have their own private patio. The building is served by a 22-car indoor parking garage and additional parking in the adjacent lot. Canfield Lofts was built by Midwest Commercial Services and was developed by Canfield Lofts LLC. The project was designed by Archives DS and won two AIA Awards for Excellence in Design. HISTORY Detroit building permit #16826 was issued to Lane, Davenport & Peterson, engineers and architects on April 8, 1921 for the construction of a two story reinforced concrete garage and service station for F. J. Whitney. The Detroit branch of the Buick Motor Company occupied the building from 1922 through 1928. Other businesses to occupy the building include Murry Corporation of America, service parts (1929-1931); the Whirlgas Garage (1934); Art Nelson Auto Repairs (1935); the Michigan National Guards 107 Quartermaster Division (1940).
